Prairieland Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is a private, nonprofit corporation organized in 1983 to deliver the U.S. SBA 504 program. Today, Prairieland EDC is a SBA 504 Premier Certified Lender. As a non-traditional lender for more than 20 years in the region, Prairieland EDC has created a diverse portfolio of more than 250 loans for about $55 million. In 1973, the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission was organized by local elected officials as authorized by the Regional Development Act of 1969. Its purpose, according to the legislation, is to "facilitate intergovernmental cooperation and to ensure the harmonious coordination of state, federal, and local comprehensive planning and development programs for the solution of economic, social, physical, and governmental problems of the state and its citizens." The UMVRDC is governed by a board of representatives from counties, townships, cities, school districts, tribal council and special interest groups. This group is referred to as the "Commission." Since the capitalization of the Southwest Regional Development Commission (SRDC) Revolving Loan fund in 1995, the SRDC has made 72 loans for a total of $4.2 million. As repayments are made to the pool, they continue to be relent to small businesses throughout the region.
